Imagine a secret hideaway on Haji Lane, where you walk a flight of wooden shop-house stairs into an intimate, tranquil salon haven, removed from the hustle and bustle of Singapore and adorned with beautiful art pieces and fair-trade items. You are greeted by friendly faces, ready to pamper you to an afternoon of manicures pedicures and delicious treats, and if that wasn’t enough, all of this is in support of a fantastic cause: empowering underprivileged women.
Women helping and supporting women is a subject that owners and founders Cheryl Ou and Germaine Monteiro are passionately championing with their first ever “socially conscious salon.” Each having their own personal reasons that led them to the creation of this brilliant business concept/philanthropic enterprise, they set out to create The Nail Social, where they hire women who would otherwise not be able to access education to have a sustainable job.
The Nail Social is a socially-conscious salon that was established with the aim of training and employing local underprivileged women with a higher barrier to employment, so as to help them progress from a position of vulnerability to security and self-sufficiency.
In partnership with The Pink Room International Nail Academy, we network with various social agencies in Singapore to identify local women who face greater barriers of entry to employment. This can range from members of a low-income family, the uneducated, single mothers or ex-offenders. These women are then enrolled in a Professional Manicurist Course, which is co-sponsored by the Pink Room and The Nail Social, and suitable candidates are then offered employment to join our core team at the salon.
However, this is no ordinary nail salon. Each comfy recliner is equipped with it’s own mounted iPad, headphones and….wait for it…Netflix! Yes, Netflix!!! So that means, you can cozy-up and choose your favorite TV series, or maybe a movie that you missed, (or if you’re me, you might watch Our Idiot Brother for the 50th time and laugh for an hour), all while indulging in one of their luxurious treatments: manicure, pedicure and foot reflexology services. All of the products they use are non-toxic, eco-friendly, fair-trade and/or cruelty-free. I loved their organic Angel Pro gel nails (the color on my hands is #8. It’s seriously gorge!) Really, these ladies have thought of everything.
You also can choose from a variety of hot and cold drinks as well as baked goods provided by a low-income single mother. A lady next to me ordered the hot brownie, and as it was brought out to her, it smelled so rich and chocolaty that I had to make a note to try it next time.
After you finish your treatments (and your shows on Netflix), peruse the fair-trade arts, crafts, and jewellery on display around the boutique. I found the perfect piece of art for a friend and a gorgeous bracelet for myself.
You can feel good about treating yourself at The Nail Social. Every dollar you spend is helping support a business, which is empowering women, fair-trade, and socially conscious artists and organizations. The best part: the quality and service you receive is some of the best in all of Singapore and you will leave with nails that sparkle and shine. I haven’t stopped getting compliments on mine!
